If you've ever wondered what dance music in a haunted house might sound like, along comes
SALEM to scare you right onto the dance floor. Since the band first started making waves in the blogosphere last year with a series of spooky, hip-hop inflected tracks that combine gothy synth sounds ghostly vocals. This fall the band will finally release a long-awaited debut album,
King Night, and take their live show on the road.
Comprised of three friends from Michegan--John Holland, Heather Marlatt, and Jack Donoghue--the band's history is as weirdly mysterious as the music it makes, but that mystery is a part of what makes the band so deeply compelling. Few artists in recent memory have been able to combine so many seemingly opposing elements--death metal, shoegaze, electro, rap--and whip it into something that sounds totally new and just a little bit frightening. This music is equally perfect for your next basement rave or late night seance.
King Night is dark, deep, and quite possibly the best record of 2010 (so far).
