Washed Out
At a time when so much music all sounds the same, it's refreshing to hear a record that literally sounds like nothing else. Washed Out is like that. Waves of hazy synthesizer sounds and warbly, dreamlike vocals characterize the band's sound, which has sparked it's own lo-fi electronic music movement (somewhat unimaginably referred to by critics and bloggists as "chill wave").  Is Washed Out music from the future? Is this a record from the early 80's that someone found in a rusty time capsule buried somewhere in Berlin? Nope, it's music made by a shy 26-year-old dude who lives in rural Georgia, which almost makes it weirder than if it were actually being beamed into your headphones by some DJ in tomorrowland.

Ernest Greene is the man behind the music. After graduating from college and finding himself unable to find a job, Greene faced the bummer prospect of moving back in with his parents while trying to figure out what to do with his life. In an effort to stave off boredom and depression, Greene started making beautiful, chill-tacular electronic music in his bedroom. Washed Out was born.

So far Greene has only one proper release, an EP called Life of Leisure. That's sure to change pretty quickly though. The buzz about Washed Out has been strong and no doubt Greene has lots of labels courting him at the moment. Apparently the world is hungry for more gorgeously melancholic electronic music that sounds like it was recorded on a tape recorder in heaven. I know I am.
